OK - I thought I would say (in a comment - just in case anyone is subscribed to the comment RSS feed - not to self: install feedburner!)

I got IT Support at our company to turn off the group policy for Firefox, as it was out of date - I then removed every trace of Firefox from my system (I also got admin rights at the same time, so was able to go into the registry and delete stuff- note to PC dabblers - do this only if you know what you are doing), restarted the system, installed a fresh recently downloaded installer for Firefox 3 and installed it. I restarted, and this time it works.

So that's resolved - make sure you IT department keeps on top of the group policy when browsers release major updates.
